Community beach · Living shoreline

A community beach, rebuilt and planted.

At Winchester on the Severn, the community’s beach was replenished and a living shoreline was planted along it.

Sand was placed and staked out for planting; marsh grass now grows in along the new edge, holding the sand and softening the shoreline beside the community pavilion.

What is a living shoreline?

A living shoreline protects the land with the materials of the shore itself. Instead of a wall at the water’s edge, it uses low stone sills, sand containment and planted marsh grass to take the energy out of the waves.

The marsh roots bind the sand, the sill holds the toe, and the shoreline keeps working as habitat for fish, crabs and birds while it protects your property.

Maryland prefers living shorelines wherever a site is suitable for one. Part of WEDC’s evaluation is telling you honestly whether yours is — and engineering the right solution if it is not.
